Selkies
In 2011 I was fortunate to see a retrospective exhibition of the Kinngait Studios while visiting the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, Canada. The stark and sinous style of the Inuit printmakers had a huge influence on my way of constructing an image, and encouraged me to use minimal interventions and background details.
At the same time I had become interested in the Celtic and Skandinavian legends of the shapeshifting Selkie folk, and was searching for a way to translate the ambiguous situations and transformations into simple but striking imagery.
