Four Pictures of Birds

Made with a mix of digital shapes and ink washes, this riso zine contains dreamy symmetrically-structured images of imaginary birds, and opens up into a poster showing a mystical musical journey.

About Go We

For this zine I initially drew characters freehand, letting some images based on the anonymous Elizabethan lyrics emerge, and then assembled them digitally against the backdrop of a stone lithography lo-shu wash. The font is Kavavinar.
The lyrics are anonymous, but have been set to music over the centuries by John Lyly, Thomas Ravenscroft, John Rutter, Stephen Chatman and Carl Orff.

Midnight’s Bell

Made with my hand-carved stamps and a typewriter, this booklet contains the words from a song within the 1602 play "Blurt, Master-Constable", attributed to Thomas Middleton, and familiar to me from Benjamin Britten’s Nocturne for tenor, 7 obligato instruments and strings Op.60.

Shamanesses

A zine and potential game, with the text hinting at both rules for a boardgame and guidelines for living. Characters are inspired by stages on a walk near my home, the plants and animals to be found there, and a philosophy of sharing and reciprocity with the natural world.

Summerfall

Created using a mix of hand-carved stamps and paper stencils, this riso-printed artists book celebrates the height (and heat) of summer and joy at the abundance of harvest. Originally an answer to an earlier creation "Winterspring" (see below), it's riso-printed in a variable edition of 85 - the black-printed figures are the same in every book, but the background shifts between a mix of green leaves, red fruit and fluorescent orange lightning-flashes.

Winterspring

This artist book has pull-out pages, illustrating the impatience of the season when it’s no longer winter but not quite yet spring. Inspired by carnival season folk traditions in Europe, I created the layers with my hand-carved stamps and a lightbox. I then used the photocopy function on the risograph machine to create the masters and print the zine in 4 colours. My reluctance to use digital technology led to the creation of two slightly different covers.

Many Monsters

This fold out art zine is full of monsters. Each page has one monster, illustrating perhaps a character type or a state of mind. When unfolded, the zine shows a large maze: can you navigate your way through the maze, avoiding the monsters within and without? Drawing on my lifelong love of medieval monsters and bestiaries (with a nod to the "Kennicott Bible" in particular), this zine considers various monsters we meet in our daily lives: at work, school, on the internet, and within ourselves.
