For this zine I initially drew characters freehand, letting some images based on the anonymous Elizabethan lyrics emerge, and then assembled them digitally against the backdrop of a stone lithography lo-shu wash. The font is Kavavinar.
The lyrics are anonymous, but have been set to music over the centuries by John Lyly, Thomas Ravenscroft, John Rutter, Stephen Chatman and Carl Orff.

The inevitable answer to Winterspring (see below), the riso stencils created with hand-carved stamps and paper cut-out shapes. The black layer with the stamped figures is always the same, but I changed the orientation of some of the sheets of paper while printing the three colour layers (green leaves, red fruit, fluo orange zigzag shapes), creating a mix of backgrounds so that each book is slightly different.

Winterspring
risograph artist’s book, 2023
4 colours on Woodstock Bianco 140gsm recycled paper and Munken Lynx 150 gsm paper (cover)
148 x 105 mm when folded, handbound
text by C.A.Hiley
edition of 100
This artist book has pull-out pages illustrating the impatience of the season when it’s no longer winter but not quite yet spring. Inspired by carnival season folk traditions in Europe, I created the layers with my hand-carved stamps and a lightbox. I then used the photocopy function on the risograph machine to create the masters and print the zine in 4 colours. My reluctance to use digital technology led to the creation of two slightly different covers.
